In a harrowing case that has shaken the community of Baran, Rajasthan, a 71-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of raping his 5-year-old granddaughter. The verdict, delivered by Judge Sonia Beniwal, comes with a fine of ₹50,000.
The crime, which took place in October 2022, was uncovered when the child’s mother and aunt caught the perpetrator in the act at his residence. The immediate complaint filed by the victim’s mother led to the arrest of the accused and his eventual trial under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
This case, identified as State of Rajasthan v. Heeralal, concluded on August 30, 2024, with a judgment that ensures the convicted man will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
