Kerala High Court Condemns Flash Hartal in Disaster-Hit Wayanad: “Anti-People and Pointless”

In a fiery critique, the Kerala High Court slammed political parties for organizing a sudden hartal in Wayanad, a district still grappling with the aftermath of devastating landslides. The protest, led by the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF), was aimed at pressuring the Central government for disaster relief funds. However, the Court questioned its rationale and impact, labeling it a disservice to the people.

“Hartals are meant to address grave injustices, not serve as empty gestures. What purpose does this serve? Will it magically bring funds?” the Bench remarked during the hearing.

A Bench comprising Justices AK Jayasankaran Nambiar and Syam Kumar VM expressed deep dismay over the November 19 hartal, which violated prior judicial directives against such disruptive actions. The judges described the strike as “distressing” and warned of stricter measures against similar conduct in the future.

The Court noted the irony of political parties uniting for actions that harm the public, calling it “anti-people.” Justice Nambiar added, “This is unacceptable behavior, especially in a disaster-hit region where focus should remain on relief and rehabilitation.”

The suo motu case monitored the ongoing recovery efforts in Wayanad, which suffered catastrophic landslides on July 30. The hearing revealed delays in securing Central aid, despite the submission of Kerala’s Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA).

The Centre, while acknowledging the urgency, explained procedural requirements for disbursing funds. However, it announced a ₹153.467 crore allocation for immediate relief and additional measures like airdropping supplies and clearing debris. Kerala’s government contends this is insufficient, estimating reconstruction costs at over ₹2,200 crores.

As the December 6 hearing approaches, the High Court has signaled its intent to hold all stakeholders accountable, emphasizing that political theatrics have no place in a humanitarian crisis.
