After an extended pause of eight years, the Calcutta High Court has designated 81 legal professionals as Senior Advocates, marking a significant milestone for the institution.
A formal notification, issued on November 26 by the Registrar General, confirmed this long-awaited development. The resolution was adopted during a full court meeting held earlier in the month, on November 21.
In its deliberations, the court emphasized the importance of calibre, merit, and professional conduct. It also acknowledged the prolonged gap since the last round of such designations, underlining the pressing need for this action.
Meanwhile, the applications of 48 additional candidates remain under review. Their consideration has been deferred until the next full court meeting, slated for April 2025.
This move, grounded in the provisions of the Advocates Act, 1961, and the 2023 rules governing senior designations, signals a reinvigoration of the High Court’s engagement with the legal fraternity.
