Court Orders Arrest of Jitendra Tyagi Over Absence in Religious Defamation Case

A Srinagar court has ordered the arrest of Jitendra Tyagi (formerly Waseem Rizvi) after repeated attempts to secure his presence in a case involving alleged derogatory remarks about Islam and Prophet Muhammad.

The 2nd Additional Munsiff, Srinagar, directed the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) to form a special team to locate and detain Tyagi, ensuring he appears before the court at the next hearing on April 25.

The order stems from a complaint filed by Danish Hassan Dar, who initially approached the Judicial Magistrate in December 2021 after police failed to respond to his written grievance. The complaint accuses Tyagi of violating multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those related to inciting religious enmity and public disorder.

Dar alleged that on December 6, 2021, shortly after his conversion from Islam to Hinduism, Tyagi made inflammatory statements against Islam and the Prophet during a media interaction in Lucknow. These remarks were widely broadcast on television and covered by national newspapers the following day.

With Tyagi repeatedly failing to appear before the court, authorities have now been tasked with ensuring his detention and production at the next scheduled hearing.
