The Kerala High Court has dismissed BJP leader PC George’s anticipatory bail plea in a case linked to controversial remarks he made against the Muslim community during a televised debate.
Justice PV Kunhikrishnan, who delivered the ruling, has previously voiced concerns about the rising trend of political figures making divisive statements. The judge has also called for stricter laws to curb repeated instances of hate speech.
George faced legal trouble after a complaint from the Muslim Youth League Municipal Committee led to an FIR under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Kerala Police Act. His remarks, made on January 5, prompted authorities to take action.
Having already been denied anticipatory bail by the Kottayam Sessions Court, George turned to the High Court for relief. However, the court highlighted his repeated violations of bail conditions that had previously restricted him from making inflammatory statements.
His legal team argued that the remarks were made in the heat of the moment and that George had swiftly issued an apology. Meanwhile, the prosecution opposed his plea, citing a pattern of repeated offenses despite previous warnings.
With the High Court’s decision, George now faces potential arrest as legal proceedings continue.
