The Supreme Court Collegium has put forward Justice Joymalya Bagchi’s name for elevation to the Supreme Court, setting him on a path that could eventually lead to the country’s top judicial post.
Justice Bagchi, currently serving in the Calcutta High Court, brings over 13 years of judicial experience across various branches of law. His recommendation follows a meticulous evaluation of merit, integrity, and judicial competence.
The Collegium also noted that since the retirement of Justice Altamas Kabir in 2013, no Chief Justice of India has hailed from the Calcutta High Court. If appointed, Justice Bagchi would be positioned to become Chief Justice of India following the retirement of Justice K.V. Viswanathan in 2031, holding the position until his own retirement later that year.
His nomination marks a significant step in shaping the future leadership of India’s highest court.
