Justice Joymalya Bagchi, a senior judge of the Calcutta High Court, has been appointed to the Supreme Court, securing his place as a future Chief Justice of India (CJI) in 2031.
The official confirmation of his elevation was announced by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on social media, following the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation on March 6.
Justice Bagchi’s judicial journey began in the Calcutta High Court in 2011. He was later transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 2021, only to return to Calcutta later that year. With over 13 years of experience on the bench, he now steps into the nation’s highest court with a tenure of more than six years ahead of him.
His appointment marks a significant moment for the Calcutta judiciary, as he will be the first Chief Justice of India from the region since Altamas Kabir, who retired in 2013. However, his tenure as CJI will be brief, concluding with his retirement in October 2031.
With this latest addition, the Supreme Court’s bench inches closer to full strength, leaving just one vacancy remaining.
