Jitendra Tyagi Seeks Supreme Court’s Intervention to Merge Criminal Cases Across States

Jitendra Tyagi, formerly known as Waseem Rizvi, has petitioned the Supreme Court to consolidate multiple criminal cases filed against him in Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir over his controversial remarks on Islam and the Muslim community.

A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta has issued notices to the state governments, seeking their responses within four weeks. Tyagi’s legal counsel urged the court to grant him interim protection, citing threats to his life, but the judges dismissed the request, stating, “Threats exist everywhere.”

Tyagi’s plea follows a summons issued by a court in Srinagar last month over allegations of insulting Islam. His petition argues that appearing in different courts, particularly in Jammu & Kashmir, poses a serious risk to his safety, given his limited security detail.

The cases against Tyagi include an FIR from June 2021 in Haridwar related to his book, which allegedly contained defamatory content about Prophet Muhammad. Another complaint was filed in Srinagar over televised remarks made in Lucknow in July 2021. Further charges stem from speeches delivered at a religious gathering in December 2021 and additional allegations in early 2022.

Tyagi has requested the Supreme Court to consolidate these cases, arguing that separate proceedings in different states pose logistical and security challenges. The matter is now pending the court’s decision.
