Supreme Court Dismisses Woman’s FIR Against Husband Over Alleged Marriage Deception

In a surprising turn of events, the Supreme Court of India has quashed a First Information Report (FIR) filed by a woman who accused her husband of misleading her about his profession and health condition. The case, involving the marriage of the woman to Rohan, hinged on her claim that he had falsely presented himself as an eye surgeon, only for her to later discover he was an optometrist. She also alleged that he concealed his skin condition, leukoderma.

However, the Court found no substance in her claims. A bench led by Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and K. Vinod Chandran reviewed WhatsApp conversations between the couple, which revealed that the woman was fully aware of her husband’s qualifications and health before the marriage. The evidence showed no effort on Rohan’s part to deceive her about his profession or condition.

“From the documents and facts presented, it’s clear that the complainant had full knowledge of the appellant’s medical condition and the fact that he was not an eye surgeon but an optometrist,” the Court stated.

The woman’s complaint, filed only months after their wedding in April 2023, was dismissed as an abuse of the legal system. The Supreme Court annulled the Gujarat High Court’s decision, setting aside the FIR and declaring the matter resolved in Rohan’s favor.

This ruling underscores the importance of substantial evidence in cases of alleged deception within marriage, reminding couples that misunderstandings or unsubstantiated claims may not hold up in the eyes of the law.
