Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, long steeped in the halls of justice from Delhi to Bhopal, is poised to officially take the reins as Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, has formally recommended his elevation from Acting Chief Justice to the top spot.
Justice Sachdeva has been holding the fort in an acting capacity since May 23, following the retirement of his predecessor. Now, barring procedural clearance, his position is set to become permanent.
His legal journey began in 1988, when he enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi. A familiar face in courtrooms across Delhi—from trial benches to the apex court—he rose through the ranks with steady precision. In 1995, he earned the Advocate-on-Record designation at the Supreme Court, a milestone that marked his growing influence.
He spent over two decades as Standing Counsel for the Bar Council of India and over a decade representing the Union of India as part of its senior legal panel, arguing pivotal matters on the government’s behalf. In 2011, the Delhi High Court recognized his stature by naming him a Senior Advocate.
Justice Sachdeva was elevated to the Delhi High Court bench in 2013 and became a permanent judge in 2015. His transfer to the Madhya Pradesh High Court came into effect in May 2024—marking a new chapter in a career defined by legal rigor and institutional trust.
