The Supreme Court has declined to consider the bail plea of Hemant Soren, the former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, who was apprehended by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) on January 31, 2024. Soren stepped down from his position on the same day as his arrest.
The vacation Bench, consisting of Justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra, dismissed Soren’s plea which contested his arrest and requested bail. The court’s decision stemmed from Soren’s failure to disclose that the Trial Court had acknowledged the charges against him.
Soren faces accusations of unlawfully acquiring 8.86 acres of land in Ranchi, allegedly in collusion with state officials and others. Following his arrest, he has been held at Birsa Munda Central Jail since February 1, 2024. The Special Court previously denied his bail on May 13, 2024.
The Supreme Court’s rejection of his plea adds another layer to the high-profile case, keeping Soren behind bars as the legal proceedings continue.
