The Gujarat High Court has once again prolonged interim medical bail for self-styled godman and convicted rapist Asaram Bapu, allowing him to remain out of prison until August 21.
The Division Bench observed that Asaram is battling a severe health crisis in the ICU of Jupiter Hospital, Indore. Medical reports cited by the court revealed alarmingly high troponin levels — a marker of heart distress — with doctors describing his condition as critical.
“Given the present circumstances, the temporary bail earlier granted shall continue till August 21 under the same terms and conditions,” the order stated.
The extension comes despite the High Court’s earlier stance that his medical bail would see no further prolongation. That position shifted after the Supreme Court permitted Asaram to approach the High Court again.
This marks the third time he has been granted interim bail.
Asaram is serving two separate life sentences — one handed down by a Gandhinagar court for repeatedly raping a woman disciple between 2001 and 2006, and another in Rajasthan for the sexual assault of a minor in 2013. Both victims were connected to his ashrams.
