In a significant legal turn, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has acquitted Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the leader of Dera Sacha Sauda, along with four others, in the 2002 murder case of former Dera manager Ranjit Singh. Ranjit Singh was gunned down on July 10, 2002, amidst allegations that he had circulated an anonymous letter exposing the sexual exploitation of female followers within the Dera community.
This decision overturns the previous conviction and life sentence handed down by the CBI Court in Haryana’s Panchkula. The Division Bench comprising Justices Sureshwar Thakur and Lalit Batra ruled in favor of the appeal filed by Ram Rahim Singh, leading to his acquittal and that of his co-accused.
Despite this acquittal, Ram Rahim Singh remains incarcerated due to his convictions in other cases, including rape and conspiracy to commit murder. The complex legal battles surrounding the controversial Dera leader continue to unfold, drawing significant public and media attention.
