Delhi HC Steps In: Orders Quick Action on NSUI Leader Ronak Khatri’s Plea for Police Protection After ₹5-Crore Extortion Threat

The Delhi High Court has asked the city police to move swiftly on a plea filed by NSUI leader and former DUSU President Ronak Khatri, who claims he received a chilling extortion call from gangster Rohit Godara demanding ₹5 crores.

Justice Ravindra Dudeja, while closing the petition, reminded the authorities of their constitutional duty: “It is the duty of the State to ensure protection of the life of all citizens.” The Court directed the Deputy Commissioners of Police from Outer North and the Special Cell to expedite Khatri’s request for protection.

Until the Special Cell completes its threat assessment, the Court ordered that a beat constable and the local Station House Officer (SHO) must visit Khatri daily to ensure his safety and respond immediately to any further threats. “The officers shall attend any threatening call made to the petitioner and visit him at least once daily for the next two weeks,” the order read.

According to Khatri, the threat came through a WhatsApp call from a Ukraine-based number on September 29. The caller, allegedly Godara himself, warned that he would be killed if the demanded amount was not paid.

Representing the State, Senior Standing Counsel Sanjay Lao informed the Court that Khatri already has the contact details of the assigned beat constable. He added that the application for formal police protection has been forwarded to the Special Cell for final evaluation.

Khatri’s counsel told the Court the threat was not speculative but immediate. “He can’t even step out or campaign. It’s been a month, and the danger is real. The same gangster has used identical methods before—someone has already been shot,” they argued.

The High Court’s directive puts the onus squarely on the Delhi Police to act without delay, ensuring that Khatri’s plea for protection does not get lost in bureaucratic shuffle.
