A New Hand at the Helm: Justice Vikram Nath Steps In to Guide India’s Legal Aid Mission

In the quiet churn of judicial transitions, a fresh steward has taken charge of the country’s legal aid machinery. Justice Vikram Nath, sitting judge of the Supreme Court, has been tapped to steer the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) as its Executive Chairman.

The formal notification arrived earlier this month, and the responsibility lands on his desk starting today. He succeeds Justice Surya Kant, who has now assumed the role of the 53rd Chief Justice of India.

The nomination comes by way of presidential authority under the Legal Services Authorities Act, which entrusts the nation’s head of state with selecting a Supreme Court judge to helm NALSA’s operations.

On the Bench since 2021, Justice Nath now takes charge of an institution built to level the scales—tasked with ensuring that access to justice isn’t a privilege but a right, and that competent legal assistance finds those who cannot afford to seek it.
