Bihar has appointed Senior Advocate Satya Darshi Sanjay as its new Advocate General, placing one of the State’s most experienced constitutional lawyers at the helm of its legal affairs.
A notification issued by the State Law Department confirmed that the Governor has made the appointment under Article 165(1) of the Constitution. The appointment will become effective once Sanjay formally assumes office.
Sanjay currently serves as an Additional Solicitor General of India and regularly appears before the Supreme Court. Over the years, he has also represented the Union government before the Patna High Court and has built a strong reputation through his extensive involvement in litigation arising from Bihar.
His association with government law offices stretches back more than a decade. In 2015, he was appointed Additional Solicitor General for matters before the Patna High Court. Three years later, he secured a second term, becoming the first lawyer from Bihar to be reappointed to the position. In 2024, he was elevated to serve as Additional Solicitor General before the Supreme Court for a three-year tenure.
A graduate of the Campus Law Centre at the University of Delhi’s Faculty of Law, Sanjay has practised extensively before both the Patna High Court and the Supreme Court. His career includes appearances in a range of significant constitutional and governmental matters, as well as proceedings before various higher courts across the country.
The post of Advocate General became vacant earlier this week following the resignation of Senior Advocate Prashant Kumar Shahi. Shahi had been appointed in 2023 during the Nitish Kumar-led government and stepped down after the recent political transition in the State.
His resignation came in the wake of BJP leader Samrat Chaudhary assuming office as Chief Minister, paving the way for the new administration to nominate its preferred chief legal advisor.
