Delhi Court Demands Transparency in Athlete Selection

The Delhi High Court has called for clearer and more predictable procedures for selecting athletes to represent India internationally.

Although the court declined to disturb an equestrian selection for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, it identified uncertainty surrounding the period in which performances would be assessed. It recommended that future rules specify the selection window, relevant deadlines and the method for evaluating consistency, competition level and recent performance.

The ruling respects the institutional autonomy of sporting bodies while reinforcing procedural fairness. Courts are generally reluctant to substitute their judgment for specialist selectors, particularly where international deadlines are approaching.

However, discretionary sporting decisions require published standards capable of being understood in advance. Greater clarity would protect athletes from retrospective criteria and strengthen confidence in national selection systems.
