June 2024: A Month of Judicial Shuffles
As summer unfolded, so did a series of significant changes within the Indian judiciary. Despite the Supreme Court’s vacation starting on May 20, 2024, there was no shortage of activity in the High Courts.
Supreme Court:
- Collegium Pause: The Supreme Court Collegium took a break in June, aligning with the court’s summer recess.
- Retirement Alert: The Supreme Court saw its strength dip to 32 judges following the retirement of Justice A.S. Bopanna on May 18, 2024. The sanctioned capacity remains 34 judges.
High Courts:
- Gauhati High Court: Welcomed Justice Susmita Phukan Khaund and Justice Mitali Thakuria as Permanent Judges.
- Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court: Justice Rajesh Sekhri continues his term as an Additional Judge for another year, starting July 29, 2024.
