Actor Triumphs in Court: ₹17.83 Lakh Awarded for Faulty ‘Punjabi House’ Tiles

In a striking verdict, a Kerala consumer court has ordered compensation of ₹17.83 lakh to Mollywood actor Harisree Ashokan over defective tiles installed in his home, famously dubbed ‘Punjabi House’—a nod to his role in the 1998 hit film of the same name.

The Ernakulam District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC) found a blatant deficiency in service from the tile providers and installers. Despite assurances to rectify any defects, the tiles began to fade and leak even before construction was complete, causing significant frustration for Ashokan.

The court highlighted the actor’s ordeal, pointing out that even well-known figures are not immune to negligence and broken promises. This case, they noted, underlines the profound impact of consumer grievances on individuals.

Ashokan had purchased 2,500 square feet of floor tiles from Peekay Tiles Centre, imported by Kerala AGL World. The tiles, costing ₹2.75 lakh, were laid by NS Marble Works under the supervision of KA Pius. When issues arose, Ashokan’s multiple attempts to resolve them directly with the suppliers and installers failed, prompting him to seek legal recourse.

The court dismissed the arguments from Peekay Tiles and Kerala AGL World that the complaint was invalid due to the time elapsed since purchase. They noted that the duration of the warranty was undisclosed, thereby not disadvantaging Ashokan for the four-year delay in filing the complaint.

An expert commissioner’s report revealed that the damage was due to improper laying techniques by NS Marble Works. The court emphasized that Ashokan’s right to be informed about product standards and service details was violated, with vital information being deliberately withheld by the parties involved.

As a result, the court ordered NS Marble Works to pay ₹16.58 lakh for the losses incurred by Ashokan. Additionally, all parties were directed to jointly pay ₹1 lakh as compensation and ₹25,000 towards the costs of the proceedings within one month.

This ruling not only vindicates Harisree Ashokan but also reinforces the importance of upholding consumer rights and the responsibilities of service providers.
