Ambedkar’s Legacy to Watch Over Karnataka’s Courtrooms

In a quiet but powerful gesture echoing through the halls of justice, the Karnataka High Court has ordered that portraits of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar—the towering visionary behind India’s Constitution—be displayed in every courtroom across the state.

From the echoing court halls of Bengaluru to the benches in Dharwad and Kalburgi, and deep into the chambers of every district court, Ambedkar’s likeness will now hold a permanent place. A circular issued on June 19 formalized the decision, following a chorus of appeals from citizens, legal professionals, social organizations, and a corresponding government push.

But this was no overnight move. The wheels were set in motion back in April when the High Court, sitting in full strength, unanimously resolved to install Ambedkar’s portrait in a place of honor within each courtroom.

The directive is clear: the image of the man who crafted the nation’s foundational legal document is to be respectfully placed where justice is debated and decided. The circular states it plainly—Dr. Ambedkar, Bharat Ratna, architect of the Constitution, will now preside symbolically in every judicial space across Karnataka.
