Bombay High Court Orders Disciplinary Action Against Lawyer for Dress Code Violation

The Bombay High Court has instructed the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa to take action against a lawyer who appeared in court not wearing the proper attire, as mandated by the rules.

In the case [KN Surendran Pillai v State of Maharashtra and Ors.], Justice Prithviraj K Chavan noted the lawyer’s failure to adhere to the dress code. “He is not in proper attire, in the sense, he is without bands and advocate’s gown as prescribed by the Rules,” stated the June 14 order.

This directive was given in response to a 2018 criminal writ petition, during which the lawyer, Jagdish M Ahuja, failed to comply with the prescribed dress code. The court’s decision emphasizes the importance of maintaining professional standards within the legal profession.
