The Calcutta High Court marked a significant step towards digital transformation with the inauguration of a Public Information System and the distribution of the EBC Reader Platinum Edition to judicial officers.
Justice Debangsu Basak opened the ceremony by emphasizing the importance of these advancements in modernizing the judicial system. Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, delivering the keynote address, underscored that digital integration is no longer a choice but a necessity in today’s fast-evolving legal landscape.
He highlighted the growing complexity of legal research and the increasing reliance on digital tools to streamline judicial processes. “Justice delivery is an evolving responsibility, and our resources must evolve alongside it,” he remarked. The EBC Reader Platinum Edition, with its expansive e-library and SCC Online integration, was introduced as a game-changer, enabling judicial officers to access legal materials more efficiently.
The Chief Justice also noted how even senior advocates, once reliant on physical files, have transitioned to digital tools, reinforcing the judiciary’s need to keep pace with technological shifts. He recalled the judiciary’s adaptation to online hearings during the COVID-19 pandemic and stressed that such digital transitions must be embraced proactively.
In addition to legal research tools, the Public Information System, featuring digital display boards across the court complex, was launched to enhance accessibility for litigants. The system will provide real-time updates on courtroom locations, department details, and key contact information, fostering transparency and efficiency.
Justice Gaurang Kanth concluded the event by acknowledging the significance of these initiatives in equipping the judiciary with modern tools to ensure seamless legal proceedings.
With this move, the Calcutta High Court takes a decisive step towards a digitally empowered future, ensuring that technology serves as a pillar of justice rather than a barrier.
