CCI Strikes a Blow for Fair Play in Table Tennis Tournaments

In a decisive move to uphold fair competition, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has ordered several table tennis associations to end restrictive practices that barred players from participating in unsanctioned tournaments. This landmark decision aims to foster inclusivity and remove barriers that have long hindered smaller organizations in the sport.

The investigation began after allegations by the TT Friendly Super League Association (TTFSL), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting table tennis. TTFSL claimed that key associations, including the Suburban Table Tennis Association (TSTTA), Maharashtra State Table Tennis Association (MSTTA), Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI), and Gujarat State Table Tennis Association (GSTTA), were exploiting their dominance to suppress independent tournaments.

At the core of the issue was a TSTTA notice discouraging players and clubs from participating in tournaments outside the purview of these associations. The investigation revealed that such rules created barriers for smaller leagues like TTFSL and restricted competition, leaving players with fewer opportunities.

The CCI’s probe, spearheaded by Chairperson Ravneet Kaur, found that these associations had violated the Competition Act, 2002, by leveraging their dominance to enforce unfair rules. The restrictions not only limited the number of tournaments but also penalized players and clubs involved in independent events.

In its ruling, the CCI highlighted:

  • Elimination of Anti-Competitive Practices: Associations were ordered to cease imposing unfair restrictions and amend their constitutions to align with fair competition standards.
  • Shift Towards Open Competition: Certain restrictive provisions in their bylaws were already withdrawn, with clarifications issued to ensure players participating in unaffiliated events would not face penalties.

While refraining from monetary penalties, the CCI issued a strong warning: any future violations could result in severe consequences, including fines for both organizations and their officials.

This decision marks a significant step toward leveling the playing field in Indian table tennis, ensuring that players and clubs, regardless of their affiliation, can freely engage in the sport. With these changes, the sport may see a surge of opportunities for grassroots organizations and players alike.
