Collegium Reverses Course: Justice Atul Sreedharan Now Headed to Allahabad High Court

In a quiet yet significant reshuffle, the Supreme Court Collegium has withdrawn its earlier recommendation to move Justice Atul Sreedharan from the Madhya Pradesh High Court to Chhattisgarh. Instead, the Collegium has now proposed his transfer to the Allahabad High Court.

The change comes after the government sought a review of the August recommendation, prompting the Collegium to revisit its decision during a meeting on October 14.

According to the revised resolution, “Upon reconsideration sought by the Government, the Supreme Court Collegium has resolved that Justice Atul Sreedharan, Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, be transferred to the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad instead of the High Court of Chhattisgarh.”

Justice Sreedharan’s judicial journey has been marked by several moves in recent years. Originally serving in Madhya Pradesh, he requested a transfer to the Jammu and Kashmir High Court in 2023, citing his daughter’s entry into the legal profession in his home state. He returned to Madhya Pradesh earlier this year before being recommended for the Chhattisgarh transfer—now replaced by the Allahabad posting.

A graduate of Delhi’s legal circles, Justice Sreedharan began his career in the chambers of Gopal Subramanium in 1992, assisting in matters before the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court. After establishing an independent practice in Indore, he went on to serve as Panel Advocate and later Government Advocate for Madhya Pradesh.

He was elevated to the Bench in 2016 and became a permanent judge in 2018—his judicial path now set to continue in Allahabad.
