Bombay High Court Confiscates Phone Used to Record Proceedings

The Bombay High Court has ordered the confiscation of a mobile phone used to record court proceedings without written permission.

The suo motu matter arose after an employee was found recording in the courtroom. The court accepted his apology but stressed that unauthorised recording is expressly prohibited and undermines the administration of justice.

After permitting the removal of personal data, the bench directed that the device be seized and confiscated. It also ordered the employee to deposit ₹10,000 with the legal services authority within two weeks, authorising recovery from salary if he defaults.

The court warned that any repetition could attract contempt proceedings. Compliance is to be reported on October 19, 2026.
