In a case that highlights the intersection of technology and law enforcement, the Delhi High Court has asked the city police whether Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used to track missing persons.
The inquiry came during a hearing on a plea by a man searching for his father, who vanished in February 2023. Despite following standard procedures, Delhi Police reported no progress in locating him.
A bench comprising Justices Prathiba M. Singh and Dharmesh Sharma has now directed the police to explore AI-based solutions and file an affidavit confirming whether such technology is available or in use for tracing missing individuals, especially those who may have disappeared due to medical conditions or other vulnerabilities.
The Court has ordered a fresh status report incorporating any AI-driven search efforts, with the next hearing scheduled for March 18.
