A Srinagar court has summoned the heads of luxury fashion label Shivan & Narresh and Elle India’s Editor-in-Chief following a public outcry over a high-profile fashion show in Gulmarg that has stirred controversy in Kashmir.
The event, which recently went viral on social media, ignited backlash over claims that it disrespected local religious and cultural sentiments—particularly as it was held during the holy month of Ramadan. Critics labeled the show as inappropriate, accusing it of featuring “obscene” elements that clashed with the region’s traditions.
The complaint, filed by Aadil Nazir Khan of the Awami Ittehad Party, calls for legal action under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Jammu and Kashmir Excise Act. The allegations include charges of deliberate insult to religious beliefs and public consumption of alcohol.
The Special Mobile Magistrate in Srinagar, Faizan-I-Nazar, issued a notice requiring the accused to appear before the court on April 8, warning that proceedings would continue in their absence if they failed to do so.
Adding to the growing tension, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called for a formal inquiry, stating that the images from the event displayed a “complete disregard for local sensitivities.” He assured that a report would be submitted within 24 hours, with further action to follow.
As Kashmir grapples with the fallout, the controversy underscores the often-delicate intersection of global fashion and deeply rooted cultural values. Whether this legal battle escalates or fades remains to be seen, but for now, Gulmarg’s runway moment has turned into a courtroom spectacle.
