The government has decided to hit the reset button on the controversial Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2025, following intense pushback from lawyers and bar associations nationwide. The Union Law Ministry informed the Bar Council of India (BCI) that the bill will undergo revisions based on feedback received, and a fresh round of consultations will be held before any final decision.
Acknowledging widespread concerns, the ministry stated, βThe consultation process is being concluded in its current form. The revised draft will be put forth for stakeholder discussions.β
In response, the BCI has urged legal professionals to stand down from planned strikes and protests. It also noted that Union Law Minister Arjun Meghwal has assured that all contentious provisions will be thoroughly reviewed before the bill moves forward.
Given this development, the BCI has called on bar associations to resume regular court proceedings starting Monday, February 24.
The bill was initially released for public consultation on February 13 via the Department of Legal Affairs website but quickly faced backlash from the legal fraternity. Following sustained opposition, the Law Ministry has now agreed to reconsider the proposed amendments.
