The Punjab and Haryana High Court has welcomed Justice Harpreet Singh Brar as a permanent judge, marking a significant development in the judiciary’s efforts to address its substantial vacancies.
This announcement, formalized through a notification from the Ministry of Law & Justice, comes as the court operates with just 52 judges against a sanctioned strength of 85, leaving 33 positions unfilled.
Justice Brar’s journey to this milestone has been noteworthy. Initially recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium in July 2022, his appointment faced delays but was reaffirmed in March 2023, culminating in his role as an additional judge. Now, the Central government has approved his elevation to a permanent position.
The move highlights the ongoing measures to strengthen the court’s capacity and underscores the importance of bolstering judicial efficiency in the region.
