High-Stakes Interviews: 302 Lawyers Compete for Coveted Senior Advocate Status at Delhi High Court

The Delhi High Court gears up to host a rigorous selection process for 302 lawyers vying for the esteemed title of Senior Advocate. The interview sessions are set to unfold over several days at the court’s Extension Block, beginning on November 6 and spanning November 11, 12, 13, and 19, with proceedings commencing at 4 PM.

Originally, the first batch of interviews was planned for November 5, but a last-minute notification has rescheduled this initial round to November 19. The update reshapes the highly anticipated schedule that will be pivotal for many aspirants.

The pursuit of the Senior Advocate designation follows revamped guidelines established in March 2024 under the High Court of Delhi Designation of Senior Advocate Rules. The amended framework places all related responsibilities with a Permanent Committee. This authoritative body consists of the Chief Justice, two senior-most judges, the Additional Solicitor General, a Senior Advocate nominated by the Administrative Committee based on government suggestions, and a designated Bar representative.

The Permanent Committee, working through a dedicated Secretariat, meticulously curates a candidate list. This compilation includes detailed data, past professional records, and comprehensive evaluations of each lawyer’s contributions—spanning from years of practice to pro bono work and scholarly publications.

When interview day arrives, the Committee will not only engage in dialogues but will also assess candidates holistically, weighing their experience and professional merit as they compete for one of the highest recognitions in the legal sphere.
