An International Bar Association webinar on 25 November 2026 will examine pressures on lawyers’ professional independence, including attempts to associate practitioners with the clients and causes they represent. The online session runs from 6.30–7.30 PM IST.
The IBA Professional Ethics Committee is presenting the discussion, supported by the Bar Issues Commission and Legal Policy & Research Unit. It will consider historical and contemporary pressures from governments, regulators, political movements and public opinion that can affect whom lawyers represent and how they practise.
This is the second session in a five-part series drawing on Lawyers, Gatekeeping and Access to Justice: A Critical Analysis. Birgit Spiesshofer and Jonathan Soeharno will co-moderate. Confirmed speakers include Kevin Dent, Ali Yildiz, former Hawaiʻi Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald, Michael Donnelly and Pui Yin Lo.
For Indian litigators and lawyers involved in bar affairs, the subject offers a comparative perspective on professional autonomy, client representation and access to justice.
The IBA’s event notice includes the programme and certificate conditions. Booking requires an IBA account sign-in or account creation; attendance certificates require advance registration and at least 30 minutes of live participation.
