The Institute of Constitutional and Parliamentary Studies (ICPS) recently concluded its fourth intensive training programme on the newly enacted criminal laws of India. This two-day event, held from September 2nd to 3rd, 2024, in the Parliament Library Building in New Delhi, gathered officials from various ministries, Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and legislative assemblies.
The programme saw an impressive turnout, with 194 participants eager to gain a deeper understanding of the legislative shifts. ICPS, a leading institution in legal education and reform, has consistently spearheaded such initiatives, reinforcing its role as a key player in the evolution of constitutional and parliamentary studies.
A Series Dedicated to Legal Excellence
This training series on criminal laws marks ICPS’s second significant stride in advancing legal education. The initiative aims to equip legal professionals with the necessary tools to navigate India’s revamped legislative landscape. The inaugural session in May 2024 set the tone, drawing over 100 participants, followed by equally successful sessions in June and August. To date, the programme has trained over 300 officials, underscoring its critical role in legal education.
Endorsed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the programme emphasizes the importance of continuous legal education in adapting to these transformative reforms. This endorsement highlights ICPS’s pivotal contribution to preparing legal professionals for the practical implementation of new laws.
Expert-Led Sessions on India’s Legal Overhaul
The fourth session featured a distinguished panel of experts who led discussions on three key legislative frameworks. The first day was devoted to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. The second day focused on the Bhartiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023. Participants delved into topics ranging from penal provisions and criminal liability to investigation processes and the nuances of documentary evidence.
The event once again demonstrated ICPS’s commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of India’s legal reforms, ensuring that those in positions of influence are well-equipped to enforce and interpret the new laws effectively.
