In a significant move, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna has appointed Justice Surya Kant as the new Chairperson of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee. The official notification regarding this appointment was released on November 12.
Justice Kant’s appointment comes under the powers granted by Section 3A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, which focuses on extending legal aid to underserved and vulnerable communities.
Prior to this, the position was held by Justice BR Gavai, the Supreme Court’s senior-most puisne judge, who recently transitioned to the role of Executive Chairperson of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
