Kerala’s Pride: Justice K. Vinod Chandran Joins the Supreme Court Bench

In a significant move, the Centre has announced the appointment of Justice K. Vinod Chandran to the Supreme Court of India. This decision follows the recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, on January 7, 2025. Justice Chandran, who has been serving as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, now ascends to the nation’s highest judicial body.

Justice Chandran’s judicial journey began with his appointment to the Kerala High Court on November 8, 2011. His elevation to the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court came on March 29, 2023, where he brought over a decade of legal expertise to his role. As a High Court judge for more than 11 years and a Chief Justice for over a year, he has demonstrated exceptional acumen across various fields of law.

The Collegium highlighted several factors in endorsing Justice Chandran for the Supreme Court, including his seniority and the lack of representation from the Kerala High Court on the nation’s apex bench. Ranked first in seniority among Kerala High Court judges and 13th in combined all-India seniority, Justice Chandran’s elevation marks a milestone for Kerala’s judicial community.

This appointment, formalized under Article 124(2) of the Constitution, underscores Justice Chandran’s enduring contributions to India’s legal landscape and his readiness to shape its future from the Supreme Court.
