New Horizon for Himachal Pradesh’s Chief Justice: Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao to Helm Jharkhand High Court

In a strategic move, the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the transfer of Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao, currently presiding as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court, to assume the role of Chief Justice at Jharkhand High Court. This recommendation anticipates the upcoming retirement of Dr. Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi on July 19, 2024, thereby creating a vacancy.

Justice Rao has been at the helm of the Himachal Pradesh High Court since May 30, 2023. His judicial journey began when he was appointed as a Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on June 29, 2012. Following the state’s bifurcation, he continued his service at the Telangana High Court, his parent High Court.

The decision by the Collegium, which includes Chief Justice of India Dr. Justice DY Chandrachud, and Justices Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, Surya Kant, and Hrishikesh Roy, underscores Justice Rao’s seniority and the pressing needs of judicial administration. It is deemed a significant step in the public interest to facilitate a seamless transition at Jharkhand High Court upon Dr. Justice Sarangi’s retirement.

Justice Rao’s extensive experience and leadership are expected to bring new perspectives and continuity to the judicial process in Jharkhand.
