The National Human Rights Commission has stepped in after reports surfaced of a brutal gang rape in Sidhi, Madhya Pradesh, involving a 20-year-old woman. The Commission, taking suo motu cognizance of the incident, has issued a notice to the state’s Director General of Police, seeking a detailed account of the case within two weeks.
According to reports, the young woman was with her fiancé when four men allegedly attacked them. While the assailants reportedly raped the woman, they also assaulted her partner. The couple managed to escape and reached the local police station to lodge a complaint.
In its statement, the Commission underlined that if the reported events were accurate, they pointed to grave violations of human rights. The DGP has been directed to provide updates on the progress of the investigation as well as the medical condition of the survivor.
