No More Long Recess: Supreme Court Rolls Out 21 Benches for ‘Partial Working Days’

Once known as the court’s quietest months, the summer stretch is getting a facelift. The Supreme Court has done away with the quaint notion of “summer vacation” and, in its place, introduced something a little more industrious: partial working days. As per the 2025 calendar, the apex court will remain partially active from May 26 to July 13, and 21 benches have been assigned to keep the wheels of justice turning.

Instead of a blanket pause, Chief Justice BR Gavai has designated rotating benches to hear cases during this window. Here’s how the judicial roster shapes up:

Throughout this stretch, the Registry will operate 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, except on weekends and holidays. However, Saturday, July 12, makes a rare exception. Non-clerical staff will clock in from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, keeping the court engine humming.

Full-scale hearings and regular sessions are set to return on July 14, as the judiciary swaps its summer sobriety for its usual full-throttle pace.
