A political storm is brewing around the Malayalam film Empuraan: L2, with a petition filed in the Kerala High Court seeking its immediate ban.
The sequel to Lucifer has ignited controversy over its depiction of the 2002 Godhra riots and a villainous character bearing resemblance to a Bajrang Dal leader. Filed by BJP leader VV Vijeesh, the petition argues that the film makes unwarranted references to the Godhra tragedy, presents India’s Ministry of Defence in a questionable light, and undermines central investigative agencies. The plea warns that the movie could incite communal tensions and urges an immediate halt to its screenings.
The filmmakers, including director-actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, writer Murali Gopy, and producer Anthony Perumbavoor, have come under scrutiny from right-wing groups, who claim the film distorts historical events. Amid mounting pressure, the creators have agreed to modify certain scenes, with the edits set to take effect in upcoming screenings.
Superstar Mohanlal, who headlines the film, has issued a public apology, acknowledging the concerns and confirming that the contentious elements would be removed. He also expressed regret to fans for any distress caused.
The legal challenge is pending before the court, while the debate over Empuraan continues to fuel heated discussions.
