Rubber Belts and Silence: NHRC Demands Answers in Death of Hyderabad Auto Driver

A chilling episode in Hyderabad has now drawn the urgent attention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), which has stepped in after an auto-rickshaw driver allegedly died following a brutal encounter with the police inside a station that was supposed to be a place of counsel, not cruelty.

The NHRC, acting on its own, took cognizance of media reports surrounding the death of the 35-year-old man, who had reportedly been taken to Rajendranagar Police Station for marital counseling. What unfolded next reads like a grim script of abuse. Once the session ended, the man was allegedly led to a room where rubber belts replaced conversation, and beatings replaced counsel.

An hour later, he walked out vomiting, collapsed, and was rushed to a hospital—only to be declared dead.

The Commission didn’t mince words. If the sequence of events reported is even partially accurate, it pointed to a grave breach of fundamental rights. Taking immediate action, the NHRC issued notices to Telangana’s Director General of Police, seeking a thorough report within two weeks.

The question now isn’t just about how a man died. It’s about how such violence could take root under the roof of an institution meant to uphold justice.
