With the Allahabad High Court operating at just half its sanctioned strength, the Supreme Court Collegium has stepped in to ease the strain, greenlighting the names of two advocates for elevation to the bench.
Amitabh Kumar Rai and Rajiv Lochan Shukla are the two names cleared during the Collegium’s March 25 meeting. Their elevation comes at a time when the court, India’s largest, is grappling with an alarming shortfall—only 79 judges currently serve against a sanctioned strength of 160.
The move is expected to bring some relief to a system stretched thin by pending cases and limited judicial manpower.
