In a decisive move to tackle escalating air and noise pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR), the Supreme Court has broadened its existing firecracker ban to include parts of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. This extended prohibition will remain in effect until further orders.
The ruling, delivered by a division bench, emphasized that the ban covers not just the use of firecrackers but also their manufacturing, storage, sale, and distribution. Highlighting the dual benefits of the decision, the court noted its potential to mitigate both air and noise pollution in the region.
Previously, the court had directed the governments of Delhi and other NCR territories to submit their positions on implementing a year-round firecracker ban. This broader measure reinforces the urgency of addressing pollution concerns that have plagued the region for years.
This decision aligns with the court’s continued efforts to enforce stricter environmental safeguards across one of India’s most polluted urban zones.
