Three New Titans Join India’s Supreme Court Bench, Boosting It to Full Strength

A fresh chapter dawned in India’s highest court today as Justices NV Anjaria, Vijay Bishnoi, and Atul S Chandurkar took the solemn oath to serve as Supreme Court judges. The Chief Justice of India, BR Gavai, presided over the ceremony, marking the official induction of these judicial heavyweights.

This moment follows swiftly on the heels of the government’s formal nod to their appointments, making the Supreme Court’s sanctioned strength a complete 34 judges once again.

A noteworthy detail: Justice Bishnoi embraced tradition by taking his oath in Hindi, while Justices Anjaria and Chandurkar opted for English, reflecting the court’s linguistic diversity.

Tracing their paths reveals rich and varied legal journeys:

  • Justice NV Anjaria, previously Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court and rooted in Gujarat’s legal circles, began his career in 1988. Over decades, he mastered constitutional and civil law before rising through the Gujarat High Court ranks, culminating in his leadership in Karnataka.
  • Justice Vijay Bishnoi, with Rajasthan as his legal home, climbed steadily from advocate to Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. His practice spanned civil, criminal, constitutional, and election law, showcasing versatility and command.
  • Justice Atul S Chandurkar, whose roots lie in Bombay’s legal ecosystem, cut his teeth under Senior Advocate BN Naik, eventually making his mark in Nagpur courts. His appointment as an additional judge of the Bombay High Court paved the way to today’s Supreme Court induction.

Their elevations, recommended by the Collegium led by CJI Gavai just days ago, signal a new era as the apex court now stands fortified with its full complement of jurists, ready to navigate India’s complex legal landscape.
