Uzbek Arbitration Week 2024: Shaping Uzbekistan’s Global Arbitration Presence

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Tashkent International Arbitration Centre (TIAC) are set to host the 4th edition of Uzbek Arbitration Week 2024 (UzAW), running from September 8 to 13. This pivotal event is set to elevate Uzbekistan’s status on the global arbitration stage, attracting both international and local arbitration experts to exchange insights and experiences.

UzAW represents a significant milestone in strengthening Uzbekistan’s role as a burgeoning regional arbitration hub. Launched in April 2019 during Paris Arbitration Week, TIAC has quickly established itself as a leading player in promoting international arbitration, offering arbitration, mediation, expert, and dispute board services. Since its inception, TIAC has handled over 70 Requests for Arbitration (RfA), including those involving state-owned entities from Asia and the Middle East. Notably, in May 2024, TIAC managed its first arbitration request unrelated to Uzbekistan, marking a significant step in its ambition to become a global leader in arbitration.

TIAC’s innovative edge was recognized in 2024 when it was nominated for the “Best Innovation” award by Global Arbitration Review for its TIAC-HKIAC Cross Institutional Rules, a groundbreaking initiative allowing two independent institutions to jointly manage disputes. The review also praised TIAC’s roster of distinguished arbitrators and its stringent conflict-of-interest rules, which exceed even the IBA guidelines.

This year’s Uzbek Arbitration Week will emphasize Uzbekistan’s rising appeal as an arbitration venue, spotlighting developments such as the adoption of the UNCITRAL Model Law in 2021 and the forthcoming Tashkent International Commercial Court. The event will feature a flagship conference on September 9, with panels covering topics like Uzbekistan’s evolving arbitration landscape, TIAC-HKIAC collaborations, and the infrastructure for dispute resolution.

UzAW has garnered support from over 500 representatives from international and governmental organizations, underscoring the event’s significance. For detailed information on the event schedule and registration, visit the official UzAW website.
