In a significant move, Justice Surya Kant has been appointed as the Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC), effective immediately. This nomination comes as part of the powers granted under Section 3-A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. The announcement was made by the National Legal Services Authority (NLSA) on November 12, 2024, following a decision by Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna.
Justice Surya Kant, a respected figure in the legal community, brings with him a wealth of experience, including his tenure as the youngest Advocate General of Haryana. He was appointed as a Supreme Court Judge on May 24, 2019, and is expected to ascend to the role of Chief Justice of India in 2025, where he will serve until his retirement in 2027.
