The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Bombay High Court Justice Ravindra V Ghuge as the next Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.
The recommendation was made at the Collegium’s meeting on August 6. Justice Ghuge is currently serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
Justice Ghuge completed his law studies at MP Law College in Aurangabad in 1990 and enrolled as an advocate the same year. He initially practised before the Bombay High Court as well as Industrial and Labour Courts, representing workers and trade unions in around 2,000 matters.
His practice later expanded to include corporate and industrial clients, with Justice Ghuge handling cases involving nearly 250 industries, including multinational companies and major private-sector enterprises.
He was elevated to the Bombay High Court Bench in 2013.
Justice Ghuge took charge as Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court after then Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar was elevated to the Supreme Court in June 2026.
The Calcutta High Court currently has 41 judges against a sanctioned strength of 72, leaving a substantial number of positions vacant.
