The Supreme Court has held that conversion to Islam does not automatically place a person within any notified Backward Class Muslim community in Tamil Nadu.
The dispute concerned a convert who had belonged to a backward Hindu community and sought a community certificate as a Labbai Muslim. The court said former caste status cannot simply be transposed after conversion, and a private religious certificate cannot conclusively establish statutory entitlement.
Affirming the Madras High Court, the bench struck down the government order that created such a route without proof of the required social and legal connection to a notified community. It stressed that a community certificate declares an existing status; it does not create one or override constitutional conditions. The special leave petition was dismissed on 15 October 2026.
