The Supreme Court Collegium has given its nod to promote nine additional judges across four High Courts—Andhra Pradesh, Calcutta, Chhattisgarh, and Karnataka—recommending they be made permanent. At the same time, it’s handed a one-year extension to seven additional judges from the Calcutta High Court, keeping their fate in a holding pattern for now.
Here’s how the Collegium’s latest round of judicial housekeeping shapes up:
Confirmed for Permanent Positions:
Andhra Pradesh High Court:
- Justice Harinath Nunepally
- Justice Kiranmayee Mandava (also known as Kiranmayee Kanaparthy)
- Justice Sumathi Jagadam
- Justice Nyapathy Vijay
Chhattisgarh High Court:
- Justice Ravindra Kumar Agrawal
Karnataka High Court:
- Justice Gurusiddaiah Basavaraja
Calcutta High Court:
- Justice Partha Sarathi Sen
- Justice Apurba Sinha Ray
One More Year in Waiting: Calcutta High Court Extensions:
- Justice Biswaroop Chowdhury
- Justice Prasenjit Biswas
- Justice Uday Kumar
- Justice Ajay Kumar Gupta
- Justice Supratim Bhattacharya
- Justice Partha Sarathi Chatterjee
- Justice Md Shabbar Rashidi
While some ascend to permanence, others remain on the bench with time ticking on temporary robes. The Collegium, it seems, continues to keep one eye on performance and the other on the future of the judiciary.
