Supreme Court Demands Telangana DGP’s Presence Over Missing Chargesheet Details

In an unexpected turn, the Supreme Court has summoned the Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) to clarify confusion surrounding the filing dates of a chargesheet in a politically sensitive case. The directive comes after the State’s legal representatives were unable to provide clear answers during court proceedings.

A bench led by Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti expressed dismay at the disjointed communication between the prosecution and government counsel. The bench noted the lack of coordination, with critical information about the chargesheet’s filing date absent.

“We are surprised by the government’s inability to produce this basic information. Such dates should be readily accessible, or at the very least, the prosecuting officer should have been prepared with the relevant details,” the Court remarked, highlighting the gap in communication between the parties.

The DGP has been ordered to appear before the court on October 4, either in person or via video conference, to resolve the matter. The State’s counsel is expected to present the necessary information regarding the chargesheet at that time.

This development arose during the hearing of a plea filed by Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Vatti Janaiah Yadav. Yadav, previously a member of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), has claimed political persecution by the BRS-led government following his defection to the BSP. He alleges the registration of multiple criminal cases against him as part of a broader political vendetta.

Last year, the Supreme Court granted Yadav temporary protection from arrest in connection with thirteen FIRs filed against him, and the case has continued to generate legal controversy. Despite his efforts, Yadav lost his bid in the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections, further fueling tensions between him and his former party.
