Meghalaya High Court Accepts Apologies for Lawyers’ Boycott

The Meghalaya High Court on 14 October accepted unconditional apologies from advocates who joined a call to abstain from court work, discharged them from suo motu contempt proceedings and closed the PIL. The bench said the boycott was withdrawn promptly after notices were issued, the apologies showed genuine remorse and the advocates assured the court they would not support future stoppages. It held that these steps restored the majesty of law, while dropping proceedings against two lawyers who had continued appearing and two former office-bearers who had resigned before the resolution.

Judge / Bench — Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice H.S. Thangkhiew. The order was authored orally by Chief Justice Dere.

Advocates appearing — For the petitioner — Not named in the order. For the respondents — N.D. Chullai, AAG, with A.S. Dey, Sr GA, and S. Laloo, GA.
