In a notable shift from tradition, the Delhi High Court has declared the first and third Saturdays of every month as official working days. Previously, Saturdays were largely reserved as holidays, except for occasional exceptions.
The decision emerged from a Full Court meeting on December 22, 2025, and was formally notified today. This move builds on a 2025 pilot, when individual Benches were asked to sit one Saturday each month to help tackle a backlog of cases.
The policy has not been without controversy. The Delhi High Court Bar Association had voiced concerns that lawyers were left out of the consultation process, warning that such Saturday sessions could disrupt work–life balance and pose logistical hurdles. They had recommended either pausing the plan or standardizing a single working Saturday across all Benches.
With the new directive now official, Saturdays may soon become a familiar feature in the Delhi legal calendar.
